It's not long now and we'll be leaving Corrymeela and Ireland to move to Germany and into our new home in Steinen near the Black Forest and close to Switzerland and France.
Right now we are busy packing and getting organized. We will miss Corrymeela dearly but we are also quite excited about Steinen and the Lutheran Parish (http://www.elkib.de/) where Kai will be the new minister from September on. Please, keep us in your thoughts and prayers for the next weeks on our way to Germany.

Inzwischen sind wir mobil und das phantastische Wetter der letzten Wochen hat uns zu unseren ersten Ausfluegen mit der ganzen Familie ermutigt. Wir versuchen, die wunderbare nordirische Landschaft noch so viel wie moeglich zu geniessen. Ende Juli ist jetzt unser Umzug nach Steinen geplant, wo wir dann wieder weit entfernt vom Meer wohnen werden.

Hello there! Finally getting round to passing on all the details of our good news! Two new little boys in the world! Little brothers for Gabriel and Simeon!

Tristan Joseph and Rowan Emmanuel Hughes, born 29th March 2008 at 06.37 and 06.54 respectively, at the Causeway Hospital in Coleraine.

Tristan weighed 6lb 6oz and Rowan 5lb 10oz

All the family doing well, a bit less time on our hands than before!

The birth was relatively easy, but we were in the right place, as Helen haemorrhaged afterwards and found herself in a scene from Casualty for half on hour, drips being attached to both arms etc… Sad not to be at home but all turned out for the best!

Our life has changed once more and we are blessed with two more beautiful boys, although this time - quite unexpected - twins. They were born on Saturday 29 March in hospital at Coleraine and came home the very next day with Helen. All are healthy and we are still trying to adjust to the new size of our family.

I want to ride my bicycle

A tiny, tiny step for mankind but a big step for Gabriel who now can ride his bicycle. It took him two days to work out how to after having lots of practice on his walking bike before. He didn't need stabilizers at all! Perhaps Tour De France next year ... ?

The New Year at Corrymeela has started with a big surprise: We had about a quarter of an inch of snow for half a day and for the very first time of our stay here. Hurray! Enough to build a little snowman.

Besuch in Steinen

Am Wochenende vom 17./18. November waren wir zu Besuch in Suedbaden in der Ev.-Luth. Gemeinde Loerrach-Steinen. Die Gemeinde sucht einen neuen Pfarrer ab naechstem Herbst. Vielleicht wird Steinen unsere neues Zuhause? Der Empfang und die Begegnungen dort waren jedenfalls ausserordentlich gut. Nach dem Kennenlernen haben beide Seiten jetzt erst noch einmal Bedenkzeit.

Celebrations and family re-union

We celebrated Helen's father's 90th birthday in Devon on the 10th July. Helen's sisters and brother came for the occasion from as far as Alaska and Gabriel was very happy to see his cousins again after nearly three years and they were happy to meet their new cousin Simeon. Kai's father came for two days from Leipzig. Mike and Volker had last seen each other at our wedding on the 11th July in 2002. Which reminded us also of our 5th wedding anniversary!

Visitors from Germany

This summer there'll be a constant flow of visitors mainly from Germany who'll come to see us in Corrymeela. It started off in June with two families from Muehltroff including four children. Gabriel was very happy to see some of his friends from our time in the Vogtland. We all had a great time with lots of fun and enjoyed a very lively week together.

reisen zu unternehmen, sondern moeg-

lichst mit dem Zug zu fahren. Unsere erste, sehr gute Erfahrung war eine Reise von Ballycastle nach Okehampton im Maerz. Die Bilanz: Zugreisen sind viel spannender und abwechslungsreicher als Autofahrten oder Flugreisen. Es ist machbar, selbst mit zwei kleinen Kindern, und finanziell sind wir sogar besser gefahren (Im Flugzeug kostet der Platz fuer Kinder ab 2 Jahren und der Faehrpreis fuers Auto uebertrifft den fuer Fussgaenger um ein Vielfaches!) Wir hatten ein gutes Gefuehl, dem Klimawandel nicht einfach untaetig zuzuschauen, sondern selbst etwas an unserem persoenlichen carbon footprint zu arbeiten.

"Marathon Man"

Am Montag, 7. Mai, ist Kai zum ersten Mal in seinem Leben einen Marathon mitgerannt. Damit es nicht gleich so anstrengend wird, hat er sich aber die 26 Meilen des Belfast City Marathon mit vier anderen Mitlaeufern von Corrymeela (Teamnummer 2693) geteilt. Es war ein super Erlebnis! Schon allein die Tatsache, mitten durch Belfast entlang der Peace Walls und durch die offenen Tore zu rennen, die sonst immer noch republikanische und loyalistische Stadtviertel trennen.

Helping to pave a way towards reconciliation, living in an international and ecumenical Christian community, the beauty of the North Antrim coast, a unique experience for our children – these are probably the main aspects of life in Corrymeela that drew us here to become the new resource family in May 2006.

We came from a rural parish in Saxony, in former East Germany, not far from the site of Ray Davey’s internment in the concentration camp near Dresden. Looking for something more in keeping with the community life we had experienced in L’Arche Lambeth in London, where we met in 1997, it felt like a God sent opportunity when we found out Corrymeela was looking for a volunteer family.

It was an eventful first six months – as we knew it would be. We had just become familiar with the normal rhythm of life and the faces of our fellow volunteers, when along came the summer programme with its all-site water fights, Indian head massages and endless stream of summer volunteers. Just as the dust was settling and the new long-term volunteers were arriving, our second child, Simeon, was born (at home in Cedar Haven), throwing in another helping of chaos. Indeed, with variables such as the constantly changing groups who come here and never knowing what to expect at worship in the Croi, a certain degree of chaos seems part and parcel of Corrymeela life. Yet through all this we have made home, getting to know the wonderful people we have the privilege live and work with and discovering what Corrymeela is about and how we can contribute to its work. A recent visit to Ray and Kathleen has helped to complete our sense of Corrymeela’s continuity and why it was called into existence.

As a family we are in a unique position. Our roles are flexible according to our gifts and Corrymeela’s needs. As a German Lutheran minister Kai has become very involved in the prayer life here, co-ordinating the worship rota, encouraging and helping others to lead worship, and taking care of the Croi. He also plays a part in welcoming visitors to the centre, and has been helping with the running of some of the programmes. Helen has been keeping an eye on the stock of non-human resources needed for working with groups and trying to make the centre feel uncomfortable about its lack of environmental friendliness! It has gradually become plain, however, that it is more who we are as a family than what we do here that is of significance. The children in particular make a valuable contribution to a more holistic and stable sense of community. Baby Simeon is adored by all and sundry. Gabriel, at almost three years old, provides a sometimes much-needed distraction for the other volunteers from the stress of their everyday work: “Alan, do you want to come to the playroom with me? Daniel, do you want to read a book with me?” Each boy also has his own way of disrupting meetings!

Together with the boys we are looking forward to our next year here, and hope we will learn and grow as we continue our journey as a family with the Corrymeela Community.

Ein Jahr seit unserem Abschied aus Mühltroff wird bald um sein. Ein Jahr Corrymeela liegt dann hinter uns. Aber was wir bis jetzt erfahren und erlebt haben, lässt dieses Jahr deutlich länger erscheinen.

Insgesamt sind das viele vor allem positive und inspirierende Erfahrungen. Begegnungen mit ganz unterschiedlichen Menschen aus Irland und aus aller Welt. Natürlich gehören dazu auch so manche Herausforderung und nicht so einfache Situation. Angefangen beim Leben und Arbeiten in der anderen Kultur und – zumindest für Kai – auch der anderen Sprache.

An Kultur und Sprache haben wir uns inzwischen gewöhnt. Trotzdem sind unsere Gedanken im vergangenen Jahr oft auch nach Deutschland und die Gemeinde in Mühltroff-Langenbach zurückgegangen. Wir haben (wieder einmal) die Erfahrung gemacht, dass wir vieles besonders aus der Ferne und nach einem Abschied schätzen lernen.

Die Freundschaft zu einer ganzen Reihe von Jung und Alt aus der Gemeinde im Vogtland ist uns zu unserer Freude erhalten geblieben. Unsere Gästeliste für dieses Jahr ist schon erstaunlich lang und wird deutlich von Vogtländern dominiert.

Kai ist besonders gespannt auf den Besuch einer Jungen Gemeinde aus Freiberg, wo er vor ein paar Jahren als Gemeindehelfer gearbeitet hat und wohin er immer noch Kontakt haelt. http://www.johannis-freiberg.de/index_aktuelles.html

Die Corrymeela Gemeinschaft hatte in der Vergangenheit, lange vor dem Fall der Mauer, gute Kontakte zu Freunden und kirchlichen Gruppen in Ostdeutschland. Diese Beziehungen sind aber wohl im Laufe der Jahre eingeschlafen. Vielleicht entsteht hier jetzt etwas Neues. Für uns wird es auf jeden Fall eine Freude sein, eine Gruppe Jugendlicher aus Sachsen hier zu begrüßen und für eine Woche begleiten zu können.

Den Abstand vom Pfarramt hat Kai bis jetzt reichlich zum reflektieren und nachdenken genutzt. Besonders am Anfang kam es ihm so vor, als hätte er einen Teil von sich zurückgelassen. Das Leben und Arbeiten im Begegungszentrum ist halt sehr verschieden von unserem Leben davor im Pfarramt. Aber wir fühlen uns nach wie vor wohl im Gemeinschaftsleben in Corrymeela mit den wechselnden Gästen, unseren jugendlichen Freiwilligen und den anderen Beschäftigten im Zentrum.

Als Familie fühlen wir uns immer noch am zurzeit bestmöglichen Ort. Unsere Kinder wachsen in Gemeinschaft auf und haben 12 Freunde (unsere 12 jugendlichen Freiwilligen aus aller Welt), die sie in mindestens fünf verschiedenen Sprachen unterhalten.

Wir sind momentan in der privilegierten und glücklichen Situation, unseren Kindern gemeinsam ein Maximum an Aufmerksamkeit und Zuwendung zu geben. Und wir sehen und erleben durch unsere Arbeit hier mit Familien und Kindern aus sozialen Brennpunkten oft genug den Kontrast zu schwierigen und brutalen Familienverhältnissen. Das hält uns wach und dankbar für unser Leben und Arbeiten.

Aus dem vergangenen Monat ragen für uns auch zwei Begegnungen mit einer besonderen spirituellen Dimension heraus. Am St. Patrick’s Wochenende (17. März – ein wichtiges Datum in Irland, wie wir gelernt haben) war Fr. Laurenz Freeman aus London in Corrymeela zu Gast, um einen Kurs in christlicher Meditation zu leiten. Das Meditieren und die Anleitungen von Fr. Laurenz haben uns einen erfrischend neuen Zugang zum Gebet eröffnet.

Am Osterwochenende hatten wir eine Familiengruppe türkisch/turkmenischer Muslime zu Gast. Alle Bauchschmerzen und Kopfzerbrechen im Vorfeld können wir inzwischen erfreulicherweise belächeln. Unsere Osterfeier wurde bereichert durch die Begegnung mit tiefgläubigen Menschen einer anderen Religion und spürbarem, gegenseitigem Respekt.

Was es genau bedeutet, das uns die Gruppe in fast allen unseren Gebeten und Meditationen über das Osterwochenende begleitet hat, bedarf sicher noch weiterer Reflexion unsererseits. Uns ist aber soviel deutlich, dass wir an Ostern Schranken durchbrochen und neue Freunde gewonnen haben. Den Mächten des Todes und der Gewalt, die anderenorts wüten, haben wir in Corrymeela am warmen Osterfeuer die kalte Schulter gezeigt.

Simeon's Baptism

Our youngest son Simeon was born on 11th September 2006 at home in the Corrymeela Centre. We are very thankful for a wonderful birth experience and our healthy baby boy. Simeon was baptised on 25th December 2006 in All Saints Church Okehampton where Helen and Kai got married in 2002 and Gabriel was also baptised. Sounds like a family tradition!
